How to pause your business online in Google Search

Share

If you’re running a local business and want to temporarily close your doors, there are steps you can take to make sure that Google news still shows your business in search results. Pausing your business listing is a good way to keep it from showing up as open during this period of time (though if someone searches for your name or phone number, they’ll still see that information). Here’s how you can do just that:

Create a Google My Business listing.

In order to pause your business listing, you’ll want to create a Google My Business listing. This is an important step that allows you to control what information is displayed in search results for your business name.

Once you’ve created an account on Google My Business and added all of the pertinent information about your company (address, phone number, description), click “add” next to “Businesses.” You’ll see two options: Add or manage existing listings or add new ones. Click on “manage existing listings” and select the appropriate category from the dropdown menu at the top left corner of this page – if there’s only one option available then all good! Otherwise just select whatever applies best for where your company falls into place within its industry sector (usually either “business type” or “service type”). Next click “save” at bottom right corner of page; now we’re ready for step two…

Add or edit a phone number for your business.

You can add or edit a phone number for your business.

If you don’t have a phone number, add one now. The phone number is a unique identifier for your business, and it enables customers to find you quickly in Google Search. If you already have a phone number on your listing, edit the existing one so that users can access customer support easily by calling this number when they’re searching online.

Phone numbers are not required, but they are helpful for customers who want to contact businesses directly through search results or Maps listings (if available).

Add and verify your website address with Google My Business.

Add and verify your website address with Google My Business news.

  • Add your website address to your business listing.
  • Verify your website address by clicking on the “verify” link. You can also verify it using a mobile app, like [Google Maps](https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/?pli=1) (Android) or [Apple Maps](https://itunes.apple .com/us/app/apple-maps-for-iphone-and-ipad/) (iOS).
  • Add images to your listing, if applicable; make sure they’re visible at both large and small sizes so they don’t get cropped out when someone zooms in on them!

  • Verify your business hours so that they show up in Google Search.

You can choose to verify your business hours, which will allow you to set them for specific days of the week and at certain times during the day. If you don’t want these details to be public, but still want Google Search results with accurate information about when your business is open or closed, verify just the opening time and leave everything else blank (or delete it).

  • Add an image for each listing on Google My Business with instructions for users who are viewing it at a large size (like on mobile devices) as well as one optimized specifically for small screens like those found on phones or tablets.*

Add an image to your business listing that’s visible at both large and small sizes.
